Musical Director - Garry Hallas

Garry took up the baton at Emley in April 2003 following highly successful spells with Gawthorpe Brass and Grangemoor Brass Band. He has lead Emley to an appearance at the National Brass Band Finals of Great Britain and Promotions in 2007 and 2010 picking up trophies at Malton Entertainment Contest, The Whit Friday Marches, Brighouse March and Hymn Tune Contest, Pogson Bray Trust Contest, Wychavon Festival of Brass and The Bolsover Entertainment Contest along the way.

Garry’s competitive success began with his debut contest performance at the Hardraw Scar contest with the Rothewell Temperance band only a year after he had begun playing the cornet at nine years old. After progressing to Principle Trumpet of the South Leeds Music Centre Junior Orchestra he decided to take up percussion believing this to be ‘a trendier thing to do’. This proved to be a wise choice as Garry’s talents have lead him to play for The Ransome Band, The Yorkshire Imperial Metals Band and The world famous Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band. Performances at the Yorkshire Regional Brass Band Finals, The National Brass Band Finals, The Brass in Concert Championships, The British Open Championships, The Scottish Open and Spring Festival competitions have enhanced Garry’s musical career.

Besides being Musical Director for Emley, Garry is also Musician in Residence at Harrogate High School and conducts the Harrogate High School Concert Band and still regularly performs as a freelance percussionist.
